Power for Your Computer

What is bad power?

Bad power can mean that either you do not have a good earth ground (the voltage between neutral and ground should be 0, with a maximum of 0.06 V) or have other equipment plugged into the same power source that causes voltage spikes.

How do I deal with bad power?

Have the computer on a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply). This will not regulate the earth ground, but will regulate power voltages. Ensure that the computer is on its own dedicated line and that no other equipment (such as photocopy machines, refrigerators, etc.) are plugged into that line. The printer should be plugged into that line, but not plugged into the UPS.

Do I connect my printer to the UPS?

No, DO NOT have the printer on the UPS. Most UPS's specifically state NOT to hook a printer up to them. UPS power somehow burns up the printer motor.
