How can I suppress the annoying window that asks login and password in a simple peer to peer Windows 98 networks?

Ronald Scheepstra (ronald.scheepstra@fevd.nl), January 1999.

Delete the *.pwl file in your windows directory.  Edit the system.ini delete the section where the *.pwl files are listed setup the system that there is only one profile.

Login again but leave the password empty.

Windows will not ask for the password the next time.

Another option is to download the powertoys from Microsoft and use the TweakUi.

I have just installed Windows 98 on a new computer.  I cannot find anymore the fax utilities included in Windows 95.

You can find the Windows 95 fax program on your Windows 98 CD-ROM under TOOLS\OLDWIN95\MESSAGE\US\AWFAX.EXE.  (Not tested).

I am using Windows NT.  How do I make an emergency repair disk (ERD)?

You should always have an up-to-date ERD for your NT machines.  It can be used to get your system running again if something goes wrong while modifying your system.

  1. Click Start, go to Programs and click command Prompt.
  2. Type RDISK/S <ENTER>.
  3. When prompted "Do you want to create an Emergency Repair Disk 2" click "Yes".
  4. Follow the prompts.

The IS switch ensures that the files in the \WINNT\repair folder get updated.    When you modify your system the files are not automatically updated.

I am using Windows NT.  How do I use an emergency repair disk (ERD)?

If you have a current Emergency Repair Disk (ERD) you can do a repair to your Windows NT installation, without having to reinstall everything.  You will need the following:

Insert Setup Disk#1 and turn on the computer.  Insert Setup Disk #2 when prompted.   You will get the Welcome to Setup screen, which gives you the option to install, update or repair Windows NT.  Select repair.

Then you will get the following Repair Options list:

If your ERD is not current, do not select Inspect Registry Files, because it will bring your registry back to the date of the ERD, with possible fatal results.  So be careful with this option.

The other options "should" be safe and hopefully solve your problems.   When your system works again, do not forget to reinstall your latest service pack, since the repair replaces files from the Windows NT Installation CD-ROM.

How do I make an NT boot disk?

Format a 3.5 "disk under Windows NT.  A Windows 95 or DOS formatted disk will not work.  Copy the following files from your hard disk to your 3.5 "disk".

ntldr This file is not computer specific.
ntdetect.com This file is not computer specific.
boot.ini This file controls the NT startup menu and is computer specific.  Even if this file is missing NT can start if NT is on the first controller, first drive and first partition in the \Winnt directory, the default path.
boosect.dos This file is used if you choose the DOS boot option.   This file is computer specific because it contains information about where NT relocated the old DOS boot sector of the disk.
ntbbotdd.sys This file is a device driver only for the SCSI controller.   If you use IDE, you do not need this file.  If the SCSI disk is device 0 or 1, you do not need this file because the BIOS on the SCSI card lets the boot process access the disk.  This file is computer specific or you can copy it from another computer with the same SCSI card.

Be aware that these files are typically hidden, so you must change their attributes or turn on the option to show hidden files.

After building boot disk, make sure it works!

How do I capture and print a screen image under Windows?

The Print Screen key captures your full screen image and copies it to the clipboard. You paste it into a graphics program like Windows Paint and print it from there.

If you hold the Alt key down and the hit the Print Screen key you will copy the active window into the clipboard.
